The Vinalhaven Housing Initiative (VHI) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to provide housing opportunities to sustain a year-round island community on Vinalhaven.

Creating year-round affordable housing for residents who live and work on the island is a pressing need. VHI is working to address that need by acquiring property and structures; renovating and building affordable housing units; and leasing units to island residents who are eligible for affordable workforce housing.

VHI is working to:

-Purchase existing housing to create long-term rentals

-Purchase existing housing to create affordable ownership opportunities for eligible candidates

-Purchase property to construct new Affordable and Worker Housing

While self-reliance is a defining feature of island life, it is the connection our sturdy, hardworking ferries maintain with the mainland that makes living on the island possible.

In that same spirit, VHI's first project is to relocate the Ferry Crew Quarters, which was slated for demolition, to a property we are in the process of purchasing, to create affordable worker housing.
