Dear Neighbor,

There is something special about this community surrounded by ocean, that the people who choose to live here are both self-reliant, and also understand the importance of helping each other when the need arises. Living and working so close to a force as powerful and unpredictable as the sea, it is easy to understand that turns in fortune are often not of our own making.

The turn of fortune which is currently impacting our community is that the price of a residential home has climbed drastically in recent years, putting housing out of reach for anyone with a typical workforce income. Many of the people who make up the fabric of our community have struggled to find places to live- the young, recently graduated, our elders, and our working people, and many others who make it possible for this island to be inhabited year-round, and a welcoming summer home to so many.

In 2023 the Vinalhaven Housing Initiative was formed as a 501(c)3 nonprofit to address the housing shortage and secure housing for the many people who keep our community functioning and make this island feel like a home, not just a place.
