Mission Statement
VHI is devoted to creating year-round affordable and sustainable housing for residents, so that our island community may continue to thrive.
Vision Statement ~
We envision a time when critical housing needs are met and Vinalhaven residents are able to obtain affordable housing, which is essential to sustaining the long-term viability of Vinalhaven's year-round community.
VHI is governed by eight guiding principles:
1.
VHI is committed to the goal of creating five new affordable, safe and accessible housing units every year, prioritizing islanders wherever possible.
2.
VHI is committed to using donated land and monetary resources as economically and thoughtfully as possible, focusing on creating housing near the village on town water and septic.
3.
VHI is committed to building in an environmentally sound way, respecting the architecture of the island and using Maine-produced supplies and island contractors.
4.
VHI is committed to building energy efficient housing to reduce energy costs.
5.
VHI is committed to working in partnership with other island non-profits, landowners and town government to meet our housing goal.
6.
VHI is committed to continue using and advocating for zoning changes favorable to affordable housing.
7.
VHI is committed to publicizing new zoning regulations favorable to the creation of Accessory Dwelling Units on existing residential property.
8.
VHI is committed to its financial stability, by seeking grants, requesting donations, researching other funding possibilities and creating an endowment to support future projects.
